Portuguese Jesuit priest Melchior Miguel Carniero Leitão was appointed as Titular Bishop of Nicaea on January 23, 1555 and serviced Macau; Pope Gregory XIII issued an edict for the establishment of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Macau on January 26, 1576, and he was appointed as the first bishop of Macau and he served Macau till 1581. The current bishop of Macau is José Lai. Until now, there is no bishop appointed as archbishop or cardinal.
